Who We Are
In February 1986, a small group of parents living in Mill Woods met to discuss a community living arrangement for their multiply disabled children.
Several options were explored including individualized funding arrangements within the family homes, specialized foster care and other residential programs. The group carefully considered each of the options and all agreed that the best living arrangement for their children at that time would be a four-bedroom home in Mill Woods, located near the families, and staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with rehabilitation staff.
After becoming incorporated as a non-profit society in October 1986, the Society submitted a formal service proposal to Alberta Social Services, which was approved in principle in June 1987.
In November 1987, the Society recruited seven board members, consisting of professionals and interested community members (including two parents). Strategic planning took place and several working committees were struck, including finance, fundraising, policy, facilities and personnel.
Construction of the house began in July 1988 and was completed in October 1988. Staff were hired, and the residents moved into their new home in November 1988.
The Society also supports the individuals in a day program that enables them to access the community. The individuals participate in enjoyable and meaningful leisure activities and community service work.
The home continues to operate through the Society, thanks to the involvement, commitment and caring by parents and families, dedicated staff, a volunteer board and committee members.
